The Government of Liberia through the Ministries of Commerce and Industry and Health has said that the 10 containers of frozen food containing 2,774 barriers of pig tails in Braine from Netherlands remained quarantined.
Addressing a joint news conference Wednesday, the Ministers of Health and Commerce said the consignment of pig tails which was brought in the country by Cheaitou Brothers is undergoing testing.
Health Minister Dr. Wilhelmina Jallah said the Government of Liberia received an alert notification from European Commission’s Director General for Health and Food Safety informing the government of food borne outbreak suspected to be caused by pig meat from the Netherlands have been subjected of food poison.
As a result of this, she said her ministry informed the Ministry of Commerce to quarantine the consignment so as to prevent it from getting on the market.
She lauded the authorities at the Ministry of Commerce for promptly acting to quarantine the contaminated pig tails.
For his part, Commerce Minister Prof. Wilson K. Tarpeh said as a responsible government that cares for its people, it swiftly moves to quarantine the pig tails to prevent it from being sold on the market.
He warned that the government will not allow any business entity to import any unwholesome product in Liberia, vowing to take punitive action against entities that will be caught in such act.
He commended the European Commission for Health and Food Safety for its timely notification and intervention in securing and avoiding an outbreak of disease that such products would have caused.
Prof, Tarpeh called on all agencies assigned at various port of entrance to ensure that pig tails in Braine and other frozen products brought in from neighboring countries are accompanied by health certificates from the country of origin.
He said government remains committed to ensuring that commodities brought into the country are fit for human consumption.
