The Government of Liberia through the National Housing Authority will shortly begin the process of constructing an ocean defense system before upgrading the Township of West Point with modern facilities.
Making the disclosure on Sunday, July 8, 2018 during phase 3 of a consultative Townhall meeting with residents and Home- Owners in the Township, Hon. Jefferson Koijee , Mayor of the city of Monrovia who proxy for President George Manneh Weah firstly extended thanks and appreciation to the Hon. Duannah Siryon , Managing Director National Housing Authority, Representative Solomon George of district number 7 , Commissioner Dennis for organizing said meeting that brought together Elders, Women and Youth organizations.
During the meeting Mayor Koijee informed residents and home- owners of the Township that President George Manneh Weah would have loved to be present at the meeting but his absence was due to other state functions but asked me to reiterate his admiration for you the people of West Point so he asked him to serve as a direct proxy as a son of the Township .
Mayor Koijee, further informed residents and home- owners that the Government of Liberia has decided to construct an ocean defense system similar to what is currently on- going in the Borough of New Kru Town before upgrading the Township of West Point with modern housing facilities geared toward President George Manneh Weah promise to maintain inhabitants of West Point.
He also said it is the wish of President Weah to build a more affordable community that would transform West Point from a slum to another level where the community will have access to modern living standards.
“President Weah wants better improvement for the people of West Point and so he mandated the NHA and other related players in the housing sector to work together to upgrade the communityas he President Weah considered West Point as his heartbeat giving the condition he once found himself at the time with cheers from residents and home- owners at the meeting.
For his part, Commissioner William Dennis expressed his warmest thanks and appreciation to President George Manneh Weah through Mayor Koijee whom he considered a son of West Point for his decision to firstly consider the Township to provide better living conditions for the people of West Point and possibly change the community’s designation of a slum.
He also appreciated the management of the National Housing Authority headed by Hon. Duannah Siryon including Hon. Solomon George, representative district number 7, some elders’ council Women and Youth organization who attended both phase 1 , 2& 3 of a consultative meeting in the Township and indicated the prepared-ness of residents and home- owners for the exercise.
Also speaking during the consultative meeting, Hon Solomon George, representative district number 7 encouraged the two separate groups within the Township (Tenants and Home-Owners) to be cooperative to said exercise and start by processing all legal documentation in their possession and requested residents with squatter rights documents to begin making payments to the commissioner’s office so as to be capture in the data to make the enumeration exercise easier as it is intended to upgrade the Township,
He said after said upgrading exercise processes are concluded Home – Owners will be relocated from their respective transient locations to a modern and revamp community under the Pro- Poor Government with an applaud from residents at the meeting.
He used the occasion to informed all residents within the peninsula to erase the fears about a forceful evasion exercise as this Government wants to develop the land space and bring back fishermen and those who are into other businesses for their livelihood.
Representative George meanwhile recommended to the NHA that community leaders should be allowed the opportunity to get involved in the discussions about the future of West Point that are held on the radio so that they can adequately explain the nature of the exercise to those directly affected.
In separate remarks, Mr. Willie Toe, Sr. Chairman of the elder council appreciated the gathering and expressed thanks to H. E president George Manneh Weah for considering the Township in the presence of many other slum communities and expressed his council’s prepared-ness in working with the NHA in bringing the upgrading exercise to its full conclusion.
