The political landscape of Pleebo Sodoken District saw a significant change as Hon. Larry Geekor, the newly nominated and confirmed Mayor of Pleebo City, was warmly welcomed by residents following his arrival from Monrovia.
This warm reception comes after months of administrative uncertainty involving the leadership of Maryland County’s main municipalities.
The power struggle peaked when T. Tabie Thompson, the officer in charge at the office of the superintendent, issued controversial appointments for acting mayors in Pleebo and Harper, leading to widespread confusion among the citizens regarding the legitimate leadership.
Incumbent mayors, including Pleebo’s Mayor Wellington Kyne, openly rejected these appointments, claiming they would only vacate their positions upon direct appointment by President Joseph Boakai, despite being initially appointed under the previous administration led by George M. Weah.
However, the confirmation of Mayor Geekor by the Liberian Senate has brought a sense of resolution. Geekor, a prominent figure from the Unity Party and former Pleebo Sodoken District chairman, received an enthusiastic greeting on May 3. His arrival was celebrated with a parade through Pleebo’s main streets, culminating in an indoor program at the Youth Center.
The event was a melting pot of community representatives, including members from the Christian and Muslim communities, motorcyclists, business community, women’s groups, the disabled community, elders, and the traditional council, along with various youth groups. In his address, Mayor Geekor thanked the community for their overwhelming support and committed to collaborative governance to enhance the city’s prospects.
“I will not be a ruler but a leader,” Mayor Geekor asserted, highlighting his previous experience as chairman for Zone-3 Community in Pleebo City. He announced that his office would begin operations on May 4, 2024, starting with a comprehensive city cleanup campaign.
Mayor Geekor called on all citizens to set aside political, tribal, and religious differences to unite for the common good under the Pleebo City Corporation (PCC).
He also hinted that his official induction ceremony would be scheduled soon, humorously noting that he has come to prepare the ground much like “John the Baptist.
”The community expressed their support and eagerness to work with Mayor Geekor, hopeful that his tenure will exceed their expectations and bring much-needed stability and progress to Pleebo City.
