GOL, KFW Sign Euros 14m Grant For Road

The Government of Liberia through the Ministry of Finance has signed a Euros 14 million grant with the German Development Bank (KWD) on behalf of the German Government for the pavement of the Ganta to Zwedru road project.

Speaking Wednesday during the signing ceremony at a local hotel in Monrovia, Finance and Development Planning Minister Samuel D. Tweah said the money is made available under the Liberia Reconstruction Trust Fund (LRTF).

According to Tweah, the LRTF is a multi-partner mechanism that is intended to fund road and power infrastructure in Liberia.

Tweah lauded the German Government for its numerous supports to the Government and people of Liberia, adding that their support will enable Liberia to move to the next level of development.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment and support for the restoration of the country’s infrastructure facilities with emphasis in the road and electricity sectors.

“We want to solve the road problems in the next five years; we do not want to build political roads; rather, we want to build roads that will help revive our economy on a prolonged basis,” Tweah emphasized.

He assured international partners of the government’s preparedness to ensure that all necessary mechanisms are put into place to ensure transparency and accountability in the use of resources.

Tweah also disclosed that the Government of the United Kingdom has confirmed its support to the provision of an additional US$6.5 million for the same road project in an effort to buttress the German’s.

For his part, the Minister of Public Works, Mobotu Nyenpan, lauded the Government and people of Germany for the initiative, noting that the project will provide relief to Liberians, especially those residing in that part of the country.

He assured international partners of government’s willingness to ensure value for money by improving the infrastructure sector of the country, stressing: “The road to development begins with the development of road; we are prepared to implement the President’s development agenda.”

Meanwhile, the Deputy Head of the German Government Mission in Liberia, Gunter Plambeck, noted that the gesture is in recognition of the longstanding relationship that has subsisted between the two countries for over 160 years.

He lamented that though the civil crisis coupled with the Ebola outbreak have contributed negatively to the economic growth of Liberia, Germany stood with Liberia during those turbulent times and will continue to do so.

The German envoy reaffirmed his government’s commitment to supporting the Government of Liberia Pro-Poor Agenda which seeks to lift the ordinary people from poverty to prosperity.
