LIBERIA: As House Passes US$794,532,682.00 FY 2023 Budget, Who Benefits Most

As the House of Representatives on Capitol Hill passes the Budget 2023 Fiscal Year in the tune of US$794,532,682.00 amid the growing suffering of the Liberian people in the area deplorable road condition, the lack of adequate health facilities, and other benefits from taxes paid, many are wondering as to who will benefit this time from the just released draft budget.

From information gathered, previous budget passage of the national budget, the taxpayers are always below the benefiting belt; disregarding those who have paid their taxes over the years, many of whom are always the losers from not enjoying the taxes paid.

Liberians, mainly taxpayers are hoping this time that the draft budget just passed by the legislature will benefit all Liberians and others by their taxes to be used for the purpose for which they are paid.

Early this week, the Honorable House of Representatives approved the draft budget for fiscal year 2023.

According to the House of Representatives Press Bureau, the approved budget is in the tune of US$794,532,682.00.

It can be recalled, the draft revenue envelope for FY-2023 was submitted at US$777,953,000.00

Plenary’s action Tuesday, February 21, 2023 followed a report from its Ways, Means and Finance committee.

The committee said as per the mandate of Plenary, it conducted a vigorous and thorough scrutiny of the Draft Budget for Fiscal Year 2023 beginning with the Revenue Envelope.

The Committee added that it conducted hearing with all major revenue generating agencies including State Owned Enterprises (SOE’s) to include, Liberia Telecommunication Authority, Liberia Maritime Authority, National Port Authority, Liberia Petroleum Refining Company, and other revenue generating Ministries, Agencies and Commissions.

Meanwhile, the instrument is pending concurrence by the Liberian Senate, according to a press release issued.
