LIBERIA: U.S. Embassy Issues ‘Demonstration Alert’ Amid Opposition Protest

The United Embassy near Monrovia last Friday issued an alert warning all its citizens and other nationalities to be very careful of their movements in Monrovia and its environs. The warning was in line of a report received of a possible protest beginning at the National Election Commission on Tubman Boulevard on Friday October 28th.

In its alert, the embassy said amid this reported protest actions the following should be observed with caution:

  • Avoid the areas surrounding the demonstration locations. Even peaceful demonstrations may turn violent.
  • Avoid large crowds.
  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Monitor local media for updates.
  • Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests, and keep a low profile.

Last Friday, some members of the opposition pollical party, the Liberty Party (LP) of Senator Nyonblee Karnga Lawrence staged a daylong at the headquarters of the National Elections Commission (NEC).

The opposition Liberty Party (LP) said the protest in Monrovia is aimed at denouncing the perceived lack of integrity of the National Election Commission (NEC). Participants will march past the US Embassy, EU, and UN offices. Organizers mentioned other international representations without further details. There have been no specific gathering times provided. It remains unclear whether permission has been granted for the march.
