YPLS Africa Cohort 13 Opens in Liberia- UNDP Calls for Ethical Youth Leadership
Monrovia, Liberia – June 9, 2026: The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has called for a new generation of ethical, inclusive, and action-oriented leaders as the Young Political Leadership School Africa (YPLS Africa) Cohort 13 officially opened in Monrovia.
Delivering keynote goodwill remarks at the opening ceremony, UNDP Resident depends on the leadership choices of its young people.
“Young people are not just beneficiaries of development—they are its drivers. You are not the leaders of tomorrow; you are the leaders of today,” he said.
Addressing over 150 emerging young political and civic leaders from across Africa, Mr. Dia underscored that with more than 70 percent of the continent’s population under the age of 30, Africa stands at a defining moment.

He challenged participants to embrace values-based leadership. “Leadership is defined by integrity, accountability, transparency, and service. These are not abstract ideals—they are the foundation of progress.”
Mr. Dia further highlighted that inclusive governance and youth participation are essential to democratic institutions, noting that development succeeds when institutions are strong, inclusive, and trusted by the people
Backing the Vision with Action: YPLS Africa Cohort 13
The call to action comes as Liberia hosts the 13th Cohort of the Young Political Leadership School Africa, a flagship initiative designed to bridge the gap between youth potential and political leadership.
Held from June 8–13, 2026, under the theme: “Empowering the Future: From Learning to Leadership for Africa’s Agenda 2063,” the program brings together young leaders for intensive training in governance, ethical leadership, civic engagement, and digital democracy.
Despite Africa’s youthful population, young people remain significantly underrepresented in decision-making, with less than 3 percent of parliamentarians under 30. YPLS Africa is addressing this gap by:
- Equipping participants with Political knowledge and practical leadership skills,
- Ethical grounding to navigate complex governance systems,
- Tools for policy influence and civic engagement and Mentorship and long-term leadership support
Since its establishment in 2016, the program has trained over 1,200 young leaders, many of whom now serve in government, political parties, and civil society across Africa.
A Shared Commitment to Africa’s Future
UNDP reaffirmed its commitment to youth empowerment, inclusive governance, and democratic resilience, stressing that sustainable development depends on leaders who prioritize people, integrity, and inclusion.
Closing his remarks, Mr. Dia urged participants to lead with purpose and courage.
“Do not wait for permission to lead. Lead where you are… Africa’s future is not waiting—it is already being written.
