“Turnover All Perpetrators Of Rape To Us” – Traditional Council Chair Recommends

Chief Zanzan Karwa, chairman of the National Council of Chiefs and Elders and the highest chief in Liberia, calls on other chiefs to support his idea

The Chairman of the National Traditional Council of Liberia (NTCL) has recommended a harsh punishment for perpetrators of rape, and also called on the Liberian Government to handover to the Council those who are caught in the commission of this heinous crime for them to be punished by the NTCL.

Chief Zanzan Karwa made the recommendation  on Tuesday, September 8, 2020 when he addressed the opening session of the first ever National Conference on Sexual Gender Based Violence at the Ministerial Complex in Congo Town.

“The leadership of the Traditional Council is calling on President Weah to allow us to punish those who are perpetrators of rape in Liberia so that we will be able to punish them harshly, since this government cannot punish them. We will do that without delay”, the Liberian traditional council executive told participants at the ongoing SGBV conference.

Chief Karwa statement comes in the wake of calls by Liberians for a harsher punishment of rape perpetrators in order to reduce the high wave of rape cases in the country with the latest being a handicapped who is currently behind bars for raping a 13-year-old girl.
