(LINA) – Deputy Information Minister for Public Affairs Eugene L. Fahngon has welcomed back home BBC stringer Jonathan Paye-Layleh after he left the country claiming he feared for his life.
Speaking Tuesday on a local radio show via mobile phone, Fahngon disclosed that the journalist is currently in Liberia, which signifies that the security and protection of all Liberians, including journalists, is guaranteed.
Recently, President Weah held a tete-a-tete with media executives to assure them of government’s commitment to freedom of the press and free expression amidst claims of fear among few media practitioners.
It can be recalled that Paye-Layleh traveled to the United States of America claiming that he was threatened by a statement President George Weah made to him during a press stakeout recently.
The Ministry of Information clarified that the comments made by the president was an opinion not a physical or verbal threat.
Meanwhile, Press Union of Liberia president Charles Coffey has also welcomed Paye-Layleh to Liberia and urged media practitioners to perform their duties freely.
Mr. Coffey further revealed that Paye-Layleh went to his office and signed the Book of condolence for the passing of the former PUL President K. Abdullai Kamara.
