(LINA) – The German Ambassador accredited to Liberia, Hubert J. Jaeger, has challenged Liberians to prevent illicit small arms and light weapons from entering their country.
Ambassador Jaeger pointed out that the contribution of Liberians in small arms control and peace will go a long way in curtailing illicit arms in the sub-region.
The German Ambassador made the remarks Tuesday at the start of a four-day National Weapons and Ammunition Management consultation being held at a local hotel in Sinkor.
He indicated that it is estimated that more than 500,000 lives are claimed every year by the use of small arms and light weapons, noting that more than 90 percent of victims of armed conflicts lose their lives as a consequence of the use of these weapons.
He explained that small arms and light weapons are the real weapons of mass destruction of our time.
Ambassador Jaeger stressed that Germany is putting special focus of its drive for disarmament and improved control of illicit arms on the continent of Africa.
He asserted that this provides the framework for Germany’s successful and longstanding cooperation with the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) in Africa.
