As the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) led Government of President George Manneh Weah successfully steering the affairs of Africa’s oldest Republic, Liberia, after he declared himself “Feminist-In-Chief” reaffirming his unwavering commitment to the pursuit of the feministic ideals that guarantee the rights and well-being of women.
In furthering this commitment, the Liberian leader recently made a number of appointments in his government, making sure those women who are also qualified to be a part of his government in order to contribute their quota in the growth and development of their beloved country, Liberia.
Amongst those appointed awaiting confirmation from the Liberian Senate was Madam Mawine G. Diggs who is now in the driver’s seat at the Ministry of Commerce & Industry (MoCI) as Minister; her commitment to serving the country and its people has overwhelmed many of her admirers who believed her placement at that ministry is in the right direction.
‘Mawine’ as she is affectionately called from the United States where she successfully spent most of her youthful years came back to her native land to help rebuild her country by taken over the National Commission on Higher Education (NCHE) as Director General.
As the first woman to head the NCHE, which was established in 1989, she oversaw policy and regulation regarding all institutions of higher learning in the republic, foster national alignment and build international collaborations prior to appointment at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
In the United States, she served as President and Chief Academic Officer of the Eastern Campus in Michigan’s Wayne County Community College District, upon her arrival to back to her native land, Mawine in a chat with a US based online platform said, “It’s just an honor to be called back to serve,” he said.
When asked about her impression on the appointment as head of NCHE, Madam Diggs, who prior to returning home jointly served as assistant to the chancellor for student engagement at that institution also stressed, “I’m overwhelmed, I’m humbled and I’m excited because I know my passion for education will allow me to make a significant impact in this sector.”
Academically, Diggs has a Master’s Degree in education from Clemson University and is a doctoral in the field of higher education at National American University, she is also an advocate of diversity, she has taught leadership courses at Clemson and at the University of Maryland – College Park, where she also worked in residence life.
Diggs moved to Detroit in 2011 to serve as district dean of student services. In 2015, The Michigan Chronicle named her to its annual list of “50 Women of Excellence.”
Some Liberians who spoke to the GNN say they are optimistic that Madam Diggs will make the difference at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, as a woman of virtues she will indeed do her best to rebrand that ministry and redeem its shattered image of yesteryear.
