Fear Grip Employees Of Integrity Institutions, As Death Roll Call Penetrates

Barely 72 hours after four of Liberia’s leading civil society organizations working on democracy, governance, accountability, and the promotion of rule of law said Liberia is gradually turning into anarchy with the level of killings taking place amid the mysterious death of two staff of the Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA) a week ago.

The Center for Transparency and Accountability in Liberia (CENTAL); Institute for Research and Democratic Development (IREDD), Naymote Partners for Democratic Development (NAYMOTE-Liberia), and Accountability Lab Liberia said they are deeply troubled by the increasing wave of insecurity and panic across the country, occasioned by several mysterious deaths, yet to be speedily and comprehensively investigated with full credibility.

The death roll call has reached to four the number of officials of Liberia’s integrity institutions, with the latest being the head of the Internal Audit Agency (IAA), Emmanuel Barten Nyeswua who died at his home after hanging up with some friends Saturday morning, October 10, 2020.

The first were three auditors of the LRA, with two dying mysteriously in a packed vehicle in central Monrovia, as police is yet to release findings as to what actually led to the mysterious death of Albert Peters and Gifty Asmah Lama, while the other, George Fahnboto of the Large Tax Division was also died in a motor accident.

Another head of an integrity institution, the IAA has joined the others. A situation that has pondered many Liberians as to what actually happening within this sector, leaving family members of these victims to grieving due to the sudden home going of their love ones.

According to unconfirmed report, the circumstances relating to Mr. Nyeswua’s death are still unclear, sources closed to the family of the late Nyeswua, said he had earlier gone out with friends at the Calabash spot on the Congotown backroad, but following his arrival at his resident he dropped and died.

With these usual happenings within these integrity institutions, some Liberians who spoke to the GNN are concerned and calling on the government to quickly probe into some of these deaths and publicly out findings from these investigation in order allay fear amongst Liberians and their foreign residents.
