The acting Commissioner General of the Liberia Immigration Service (LIS), Moses K. Yebleh, has alarmed over the increase in illicit mining activities by foreigners, mainly Ghanaians, in the country.
Yebleh comment comes in the wake of news of increasing illegal entry of foreigners in the Southeastern part of Liberia.
It is being reported in the local media that several Ghanaians are on a daily basis illegally entering Liberia through the use of fishing canoes, and are trooping to mining regions where they most often engagedinto illegal mining activities.
In an interview with the Liberia News Agency (LINA) in Monrovia recently, Yebleh said LIS is engaging the authorities at the Ghanaian Embassy near Monrovia in a bid to address the illegal entry of their nationals into the country.
Yebleh disclosed that the lack of logistics is hampering the operation of LIS in curbing the illegal flow of aliens into the country, adding that it has deployed officers at about 45 out of the total of 176 border points.
He said the recent donation of 45 motorcycles by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), has helped the entity to deploy officers to areas that other security entities have not yet covered.
Yebleh also disclosed LIS is working closely with the National Legislature, county authorities and international partners to enhance their operations.
He disclosed that LIS has finalized plans for the retirement of about 200 officers who have long served the entity as well as those who are unable to serve due to incapacity.
