Liberian Gov’t to Integrate 2,000 Volunteer Teachers into Payroll System

Monrovia, Liberia – March 26, 2025 – In a significant move aimed at bolstering the nation’s education sector, the Government of Liberia, through the Ministry of Education (MoE), has announced its plan to place 2,000 volunteer teachers on the government payroll. The announcement was made by Education Minister Dr. Jarso Marley Jallah during a press briefing held at the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs, and Tourism (MICAT) on Tuesday, March 25, 2025.
Minister Jallah stated that this initiative is part of ongoing human resource reforms within the MoE, which already includes salary top-ups for current teachers. She highlighted challenges identified during her recent nationwide tour but reaffirmed the government’s dedication to educational improvement, crediting President Joseph Nyuma Boakai for his support, particularly through the “One Child, One Chair” policy.
“We want to express our gratitude to the government under President Boakai’s leadership for prioritizing education,” Minister Jallah noted. “The Ministry of Finance and Development Planning has been instrumental in ensuring that educators receive benefits commensurate with their qualifications and teaching status.”
As part of the payroll reform, Minister Jallah detailed the new salary structure for teachers based on their credentials: “C” Certificate Holders will receive USD 185, “B” Certificate Holders USD 210, BSc Degree Holders USD 400, and Master’s Degree Holders USD 550. However, she pointed out that a considerable number of volunteer teachers currently lack the minimum required “C” or “B” certificates or higher education qualifications.
Addressing recent student protests, Dr. Jallah cautioned against individuals inciting student demonstrations, emphasizing that such actions would not be tolerated. “Students belong in classrooms learning, not being exploited for political or social unrest,” she asserted.
She assured the public of the government’s commitment to the well-being of both teachers and students, with ongoing efforts to align Liberia’s education system with international standards. Minister Jallah also reiterated the government’s dedication to the “One Child, One Chair” policy, which is being implemented in collaboration with the Civil Service Agency (CSA) and the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning (MFDP).
“We are resolute in our commitment to strengthening every facet of education under President Boakai’s leadership. His ARREST Agenda places education as a central pillar, and we will continue our work to achieve its objectives,” she added.
This latest initiative to integrate volunteer teachers into the payroll system reflects the government’s broader strategy to enhance teacher welfare, elevate the quality of education, and ensure that only qualified professionals are employed within Liberia’s educational institutions.
