GBARNGA, (LINA) – In continuation of its humanitarian gesture to Liberia, the United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA) has provided thousands of United States dollar in support to the Fistula project at the Phebe Referral Hospital in Suacoco District, Bong County.
Making the disclosure in Gbarnga on Wednesday, the Medical Director of the Phebe Referral Hospital, Dr. Jefferson Sibley, said the gesture follows the visit of some UNFPA officials to the county, during which they pledged to provide support for the hospital’s Fistula project and the Phebe Para Medical School.
The support, Dr. Sibley added, will benefit five of Liberia’s 15 counties, including Bong and Grand Gedeh, and called on women across the county to take advantage of the opportunity to get free fistula treatment.
The Medical Director stressed that fistula treatment is costly, and urged women not to sit back and lose the opportunity provided by UNFPA, noting that all is now set to launch the project in Suacoco on December 13, 2019.
Dr. Sibley is hopeful that some old surgeons in the country will collaborate to have the project fully implemented which, he noted, will benefit Liberians.
“Even though some old surgeons are still in the country, the hospital intends to invite additional surgeons from other countries to come and help provide surgical assistance to the country following the launch of the project,” Dr. Sibley stated.
At the same time, Dr. Sibley is warning politicians against “politicizing the smooth operations of Phebe Hospital,” and seek positive means that will further assist the entity in meeting the health needs for the Liberian people.
Phebe Referral Hospital in Suacoco District, Bong County provides treatment not only for Liberians but also citizens from neighboring Guinea and Ivory Coast, among others.
