Montserrado County tough-talking Senator, Abraham Darius Dillon has submitted a bill seeking for the reduction in lawmakers’ salary.
Addressing a news conference yesterday, August 13, 2020, immediately following the submission of the bill to the office of the President Pro-Tempore, Senator Dillon said the bill intends to reduce a legislator’s salary to US$5, 000.00 instead of US$10,000.00.
He said when approved, a legislator will be able save over US$300,000.00 monthly and over US$4 million annually.
Senator Dillon told journalists that the bill is in fulfillment of his campaign promise made during his senatorial bid last year.
According to him residents of Montserrado County during that campaign period pleaded with him to submit a bill that will reduce legislators’ salaries.
The Montserrado County Senator said the monies that will be generated from the salary reduction would go back to the country so that, “We can fix the sectors that are dying,” he stressed.
Senator Dillon said he has tested that US$5,000.00 is sufficient for a lawmaker, rather than making huge salary at the detriment of the country and its people.
He made specific reference to the country’s health sector that can be improved from money generated from the reduction of lawmakers’ salaries.
“We can fix our health facilities and make them very affordable… we can equip our medical facilities …. If we really put our feet down, “ he added.
He said the lawmakers agree ti reduce their salaries to US$5,000.00 they will be demonstrating to Liberians and the world that, “We came here to represent the aspirations of our people, and we have to make some sacrifices,” he noted.
