LIBERIA: House Summons Three Officials To Provide Report On Death Of Two Liberians

The late Matthew Innis

The plenary of the House of Representatives has voted to invite the heads of three government ministries and agencies to provide a full report on the mysterious deaths of two Liberians which occurred during the past and present regimes.

The House decision was reached on Thursday following a communication from Montserrado County District #15 Representative, Adolph Lawrence.

Though the communication from the District #15 lawmaker only requested the body to seek inquiry into the mysterious death of Matthew J. Innis, who was Deputy Director for Micro-Finance in the Regulation and Supervision Department of the Central Bank of Liberia, a motion adopted by the body included Cllr. Michael Allison, who also died mysteriously during the regime of former Liberian leader Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

As per the motion adopted by the body, it is anticipated that the head of the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC), as well as Justice Minister Frank Musa Dean and the Inspector General of the Liberia National Police (LNP), Patrick Sudue, will appear before the lower House on Tuesday to provide reports into the mysterious deaths of the pair.

In his communication, Lawrence told Plenary that it was important for Liberians to know the status of the investigation into the case surrounding Innis, whose death has since been attributed to a hit-and-run accident which occurred at 2:00 am on March 3.

The Montserrado County lawmaker said after the unfortunate situation and the report from the LNP, family members of Innis have contested the reports that he died of a hit-and-run accident, especially when the incident occurred after the release of two reports surrounding the printing and importation of money in the country.

“The family of Mr. Innis believes that he must have had some basic information relative to the printing and importation of the money,” Lawrence noted.

Since this unfortunate incident, Lawrence indicated that the LNP promised an immediate investigation into the death of 48 year-old Innis, who was a resident of the 72ndcommunity in Paynesville and a former employee of the Central Bank of Liberia.
