LIBERIA: Ghanaian Journalist Calls For Infertility Awareness Using Local Languages

The Vice President of The Ghana Journalist Association (GJA), Linda Asante-Agyei

The Vice President of the Ghana Journalist Association (GJA), Linda Asante-Agyei has urged journalists across Africa to use local languages to create awareness about infertility in male and female in the continent.

According to Agyei, using local languages to create awareness on infertility in communities, marketplaces and schools can erase the myth that infertility is a curse.

Agyei, who spoke on Monday sharing experience from Ghana on breaking the stigma of infertility in Africa at a one-day Media Health Training workshop organized by the Merck Foundation in collaboration with the Office of the First Lady of Liberia in Monrovia, stressed the need for Liberia to have a center for infertility in all counties.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Director General of the Liberia News Agency (LINA), Peter Kahler, has said that the media should create awareness about infertility and mental health.

“Journalists must be driven by passion to do health reporting as a specialty with an overriding  goal of transformation of a given situation, but to do this journalists must develop knowledge and understanding of infertility while  keeping track of research and outcomes, new developments and treatment, among other things,” Kahler pointed out.

He, however, recommended that journalists increase their advocacy with policymakers for policies that include infertility and mental health in national priorities, calling the two ailments as neglected health situations.

Kahler also stressed the need for the media to establish a media action group to create awareness against stigmatization of people suffering from infertility.
