The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MGCSP) has assured its partners that it will implement to the fullest the ‘Spotlight Initiative’ Program to consolidate the gains and interventions on gender equality and women’s empowerment in rural communities across the country.
The Spotlight Initiative is a European Union and United Nations Program which seeks to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls with focus on achieving gender equality and women’s empowerment, in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Gender Minister Williametta Saydee-Tarr, in a statement issued recently, stated that the ministry is committed to ensuring that through efforts and funds provided, beneficiaries at the community level will be reached and the desired outcomes will be achieved.
It can be recalled that the MGCSP with the UN Women recently signed the EU Spotlight Initiative Agreement which is aimed at the implementation of programs intended to end violence against women/girls and to ensure economic empowerment.
Tarr expressed profound gratitude to the UN System-UN Women for their tireless efforts in supporting the Ministry of Gender, the statement noted.
It indicated that the UN System and UN Women have enhanced and strengthen collaborations with Gender-Based Violence (GBV) actors to prevent and respond to sexual and GBV programs in the country as well as ensure that rural women are empowered to contribute to the development of their communities and the larger society.
Tarr, on behalf of the ministry, extended the Government of Liberia’s appreciation to Sweden, UN SGBV Joint Program and the European Union on the EU/UN Spotlight Initiative for their support to end violence against women and girls as well as the economic empowerment of rural women of Liberia.
