The National Elections Commission (NEC) has set a new date for the Montserrado County Senatorial and District #15 Representative by-elections, rescheduling the exercise for July 8, 2019.
According to Chairman Jerome Korkoya, NEC was informing the political parties, candidates, registered voters and the public of the change in the original date of July 2.
Chairman Korkoya made the disclosure at a press conference on Tuesday held at the NEC headquarters in Sinkor in Monrovia.
He said in view of “the very tight” timeline, the provision of funds by the government and the commitment from the vender to ensure that pre-packed elections materials are in the country before June 30, 2019, the Board of Commissioners decided to set a new date for the polls.
He explained that this date is within the constitutionally-mandated 90-day timeframe within which by-elections must be conducted to fill vacancies created in either House of the National Legislature.
Chairman Korkoya said NEC would like to thank the Government of Liberia for fulfilling its commitment to provide funds for the conduct of the by-elections.
He pointed out that the government in its partial fulfillment of that commitment has deposited the amount of US$900,000 and L$114, 000, 000s as at Monday, June 17.
Korkoya asserted that NEC has not received any formal complaints of campaign violence or acts of vandalism, but urged all candidates and their supporters to refrain from unruly behaviour during the campaign period.
Chairman Korkoya warned political parties and their supporters to conduct their political activities in a peaceful manner within the confines of the Constitution, electoral laws, regulations and guidelines and with decency to ensure that the political campaign period ends peacefully on July 7, 2019.
He added that NEC will not hesitate to take punitive action in keeping with the election laws of Liberia, elections guidelines and regulations against any political party, independent candidate or their supporters engaging in acts of violence during the political campaign.
