Representative Rustonlyn Dennis of Montserrado County has written Plenary, raising concern about the sanitary condition in Monrovia and Paynesville cities.
She described the situation as “serious untidiness” and indicated that health hazard looms for residents in these municipalities.
In her communication addressed to Speaker Bhofal Chambers, Rep. Dennis said that the increasing potential health hazard in these cities “pose a serious threat to the good health of our people. And, as such, there should be a remedy to these emerging health threats.”
She prayed Plenary to summon the mayors of the interconnected cities to address the concerns being raised in many quarters.
One main issue, the Montserrado District #4 representative pointed to whether the Monrovia City Corporation (MCC) and its Paynesville counterpart did conduct an environmental impact assessment before the shutdown of the Whein Town dumpsite for another location – according to her, in the Omega Market area.
Consequently, the lawmakers unanimously voted that Mayors Jefferson Koijee and Pam Belcher-Taylor appear before their committees on Health and Mines and Energy, and that the committees should revert to Plenary in the space of three weeks.
Nonetheless, the MCC indicated a few days ago that it has stepped up its game by introducing ‘isolated’ sites for waste disposal, to safeguard public health in central city and other populous environs.
In recent weeks, there has been public criticism about the handling of solid waste in the Capital and Paynesville.
It can be recalled Mayor Belcher-Taylor blamed the challenge of waste disposal on the lack of more logistics and funding.
