Pleebo Sodoken District Youth Demands Improved Medical Care

From Christian Appleton, GNN Correspondent| Maryland County|

The Youth President of Pleebo Sodoken District, Thomas K. Nyemah is publicly demanding Cavalla Rubber Corporation (CRC) and Maryland Oil Palm Plantation (MOPP) to provide improved medical care for employees who were involved in recent serious accident.

Addressing a news conference during the week, Nyemah disclosed that last week, a tractor transporting 72 workers to their work sites at the CRC/MOPP operations overturned, causing injuries to many. Although the CRC Clinic attended to the victims promptly, only 14, primarily women, remained hospitalized due to the severity of their injuries.

Despite the initial medical attention, Nyemah criticized the companies for discharging these workers too soon, accusing them of neglect particularly as the discharged are still suffering from severe pain. “They are expected to return to physically demanding jobs like hauling palm and bush cutting immediately, which is inhumane,” Nyemah stated during the press event.

Nyemah also highlighted a disparity in treatment between local staff and higher-ups within the companies, noting that executives receive more comprehensive healthcare, often going abroad. He condemned the local medical facilities’ inadequacy and urged CRC and MOPP to refer the injured workers to better-equipped hospitals.

Additionally, Nyemah criticized the safety measures regarding transportation of the workers, pointing to the use of tractors and trucks as a persistent hazard. He recounted multiple incidents involving the same tractor, suggesting negligence on the part of the companies.

The youth leader warned that if the company fails to address these issues promptly, he is prepared to take unspecified actions against them to protect the workers’ rights and well-being. “This is about basic human rights and the dignity of our workers,” Nyemah declared, asserting his commitment to fight for better conditions for his community.

CRC and MOPP have yet to respond to Nyemah’s demands. Meanwhile, the community stands in solidarity with the injured workers, awaiting urgent actions from the companies.
