STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A Staten Island woman said she’s deeply worried about her future and that of many fellow Liberians who’ve called the borough home for years.

“It’s scary to think about; this is my home,” the woman said.

Staten Island is home to one of the largest Liberian populations outside of Africa and it is a tight-knit community.

“We work, we contribute, we’re members of the community and of the church and we don’t bother anybody. This is home and we don’t want to go back [to Liberia]. It’s not a safe place to be,” the woman said.

She asked for anonymity because of her status, fearing revealing her name and face would make her “a target.”
