Iranian Commander Killed by Drone Strike in Syria-Iraq Border, Reports Say

Iraqi officials say senior Revolutionary Guards Commander Muslim Shahdan was killed alongside three others.

A senior commander in Iran’s Revolutionary Guards was killed Sunday in a drone strike along the Syria-Iraq border, several Arab media outlets reported, citing Iraqi officials.

According to the reports, three more people were killed alongside the commander, identified as Muslim Shahdan.

Al Arabiya, quoting Iraqi intelligence sources, reported Shahdan’s car was targeted after he crossed the al-Qa’im border crossing into Syria.

Hezbollah-affiliated Lebanese network Al-Mayadeen, however, denied the reports, quoting reliable sources.

Last January, the United States assassinated Qassem Soleimani, the head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards’ Quds Force responsible for military activity outside Iran.

The strike also killed Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, deputy commander of Iran-backed militias in Iraq known as the Popular Mobilization Forces, and five others.

This was the most high-profile assassination carried out in the last year, but joins numerous others attributed to the United States or Israel.
