Government of Liberia Aims for $1.1 Billion Budget by 2026 Through Domestic Revenue Growth
MONROVIA, May 20 – The Government of Liberia (GoL) has announced ambitious plans to significantly increase its national budget to approximately US$1.1 billion by fiscal year 2026, primarily through enhanced domestic resource mobilization. This strategic shift aims to reduce reliance on international aid and foster self-sufficiency.
Minister of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism (MICAT), Jerolinmek M. Piah, disclosed the plan on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, during a regular press briefing at the Ministry. He emphasized that the targeted budgetary increment is designed to drive national development and improve the livelihoods of Liberians.
According to Minister Piah, the core of this strategy is a comprehensive revenue generation plan spearheaded by the Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA). This plan is focused on bolstering the country’s domestic revenue to expand the national budget.
The initiative, presented during a cabinet meeting at the Executive Mansion on Wednesday, May 19, 2025, by LRA Commissioner General James Dorbor Jallah, will require an initial investment of at least US$36.53 million to fully develop its strategic frameworks.
Minister Piah further explained that the strategy also necessitates the upgrade of a permanent management system. This system will empower government ministries and agencies to actively contribute to revenue generation, transforming them into vital sources of national income.
The cabinet meeting, Minister Piah noted, was convened to review the performance and deliverables of government ministers and agencies across the country, as well as to formulate actionable plans for improvement and progress.
