A Golden Gloves boxer, a Liberian shot to death in Staten Island came back to New York to celebrate Liberian Independence Day, and was shot at a party commemorating the historic event, his brother told the Daily News on Monday.
Grashino Yancy, 32, was killed when a bullet hit his right leg at about 12:45 a.m. on Park Hill Ave. near Palma Drive in Clifton Sunday.
Yancy’s parents and several relatives still live in Liberia, his brother said, and Staten Island is home to one of the largest Liberian communities outside of Liberia. Liberia became an independent nation July 26, 1847.
Yancy was visiting from Minnesota, where he moved to pursue a construction career. Police have not arrested his killer.
“He boxed, trained all the kids. He made sure he helped people,” said his brother, Hassan Sroura, who lives on Staten Island. “He loved people more than people loved him. He was so down-to-earth.” visit in Maryland county’ and further stressed, “We will surely vote for Giko, and we are 100 percent willing to support you in the upcoming 2023 Presidential elections”.
