Father in Custody After 3-Year-Old Dies in Car Fire

QUEENS, N.Y. – The father of a 3-year-old girl who died in a car fire in Queens on Sunday remains in custody as police investigate her death as a homicide.

Police say Zoey Pereira was trapped in the backseat of the burning Audi near Baisley Boulevard and 155th Street in Springfield Gardens.

She was pulled from the wreckage once the flames were put out, and died at the hospital.

Police tell NY1 the man in custody is the girl’s father and was found a short distance away from the scene, with burns all over his body.

He was taken to Jamaica Hospital in serious condition.

Investigators say they found chains as well as two propane tanks near the car.
