Liberia Supports Draft Resolutions on Arms Trade Treaty and Illicit Small Arms and Light Weapons
New York: At the United Nations General Assembly First Committee Debate, Liberia supported draft resolutions on the Arms Trade Treaty, measures against illegal trade in small arms and light weapons, and helping states in curbing it.
Liberia’s Deputy Permanent Representative Baba Sillah told members of the UNGA81 that Liberia looks ahead to the First Meeting of States on the Global Framework in 2027.
He said Liberia supports the draft resolution on its implementation and the norm it upholds as a state party to the Mine Ban Convention.
Ambassador Sillah emphasized the critical need for data collection on the impact of armed violence against women, men, girls, and boys.
According to him, the statistics will be important for developing arms control policies that reflect the real patterns of harm experienced by these three groups.
Liberia pledged to cooperate with relevant arms-exporting and affected states to enhance conventional weapons control for lasting results.
The Deputy Permanent Representative of Liberia to the United Nations delivered Liberia’s position at the Thematic Debate of the First Committee: Cluster 4: Conventional Weapons, during the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly on October 24, 2026, in New York.
