CSOs Launch National Advocacy Strategy Friday

Liberian Civil Society Organizations under the banner, NGO Coalition of Liberia will on Friday, October 19, 2018 launch a National Advocacy Strategy in Monrovia. The program is expected to take place at Corina Hotel in Sinkor.

The National advocacy strategy is being launched under the theme Setting the stage for campaign against illegal logging as well as the blatant disregard for community’s rights and benefits as it relates to Social Agreement (SA).”

The strategy was developed by the National NGO Collation of Liberia (NCL) under the EU funded project “Strengthening the capacity of non-state actors to improve FLEGT-VPA and REED+ processes in West Africa”.

The EU-Non State Actors Project is being implemented in Liberia by Tropenbos International through Volunteers To Support International Efforts In Developing Africa (VOSIEDA).

The strategy focuses on two key recommendations from the NCL Core Team review, including, making available final copies of the social agreements and contracts signed between communities  and logging companies; and making clearer cubic meters fees payment protocol and push for the repeal of the law abolishing the ‘bid premium law’ (Forestry Industrial Development and Employment Regime Act of 2017).

Among other things, the strategy seeks to publicize agreements, Liberian forestry laws and regulations and to advocate for amendment of some unfavorable laws and also push for the enactment of laws and regulations that make clearer some vague laws for better application in ensuring transparency and accountability in forest governance.

Meanwhile, Liberia’s foremost human rights activist, Samuel Kofi Woods, President of the Press Union of Liberia along with representatives from the European Union Delegation and Government of Liberia are expected to grace the occasion.
