“We Will Engage With Facts” – CDC National Chairman Outlines Extra-judicial killings, Witch-Hunt Against Government
Liberia leading opposition political party “Coalition for Democratic Change” Chairman Attorney Augustine Janga Kowo has accused the government of extra-judicial killings, witch-hunt and gross constitutional violation.
Speaking on a local radio on Thursday March 28, 2024 in Monrovia, the CDC new chairman stated that since the ascendency of Ambassador Joseph Nyuma Boakai to the Liberian Presidency, the country has been engulfed with several mysterious happenings including killings of peaceful citizens.
Attorney Janga Kowo pointed out that the deadly Kingjor protest that took away the lives of peaceful citizens was a plot orchestrated by the government against residents of the Western cluster mainly Grand Cape Mount County stating that the shooting was carried out by state security officers.
According to him, at no point in time were protesters brutalized or killed by state security officers during former President George Weah regime asserting that state security officers under the Boakai led government were seen applying accessive force including the discharge of live bullets on armless protesters in Kingjor Grand Cape Mount County.
He further noted that the action of the state security officers have since resulted in the deaths of an unspecified number of citizens and injured several.
The main opposition chairman also pointed out that from all indications, the peaceful protesters were advocating for better labor practices and the withdrawal of armed guards from a gold mine operated by a foreign-owned mining company but they (protesters) met stiff resistance.
In furtherance, Attorney Kowo argued that President Joseph Nyuma Boakai recent dismissal of the NASSCROP Deputy Director General Madam Carmerna Cephas Yeke was a witch-hunt and gross violation of the Liberian Constitution.
The Executive Mansion has since stated in a press release, “with immediate effect President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. has relieved Madam Carmerna Cephas Yeke from the position of Deputy Director General of the National Social Security and Welfare Corporation (NASSCORP) for gross insubordination to the Office of the President.
The release also noted that Madam Yeke’s dismissal was based on her failure to adhere to the high standards of conduct expected of a public servant.
But the CDC Chairman during his first major radio appearance in Monrovia quickly said, the Deputy Director General position at the NASSCROP is a tenure position of five years and so president who know by law how NASSCROP Director General and Deputy Director General positions became tenure posts cannot just dismiss Attorney Carmerna Cephas Yeke in that form and manner.
He at the same time expressed sadness over what he termed, seeing President Boakai who many Liberians see as experienced falling short on the little things at an early stage.
Attorney Kowo in a sad tune asserted that the United party government is witch-hunting peaceful Liberians and without guilt taking them off their jobs at several government institutions including the National Port Authority, Liberia Refining Petroleum Company, Liberia Water & Sewer Corporation, Executive Protection Service among others.
He noted that no Liberian should be witch-hunt or deny job opportunities due to political, tribal or other reasons adding that it is the responsibility of the government to create jobs for every Liberian of a working age.
The former Comptroller General now Chairman of the Coalition for Democratic Change noted that the Boakai led government is bent on disrupting its own governance by getting involved with constitutional violation, witch-hunt, extra judicial killings and other forms of bad governance.
According to him, though the Unity Party was disruptive and uncivil in all its engagements as an opposition political party to the then ruling Coalition for Democratic Change, the CDC as a political party will constructively engage the government in the best interest of Liberians.
He also disclosed that as a leading opposition political party, the CDC will checkmate the Boakai led government on every campaign promise and will ensure that the Liberian constitution is respected by the 79 year old President, his cabinets and other officials of government.
He added that the CDC will not relent but will hold the government feet to fire to ensure that every citizen is accorded equal protection and opportunity.
The CDC chairman also stated that regardless of the political differences and internal wrangling which is common in every political arrangement, he will strive and Unit the party as the CDC prepares to resurface at the Executive Mansion comes 2029.
The Unity Party invested more in misinformation against the CDC to win elections in 2023 but the CDC will engage with facts, Attorney Augustine Janga Kowo lamented…
