University of Liberia and Sharda University of India sign a Major Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)

The University of Liberia and Sharda University in New Delhi, India on Thursday, October 6, 2022, signed a major Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with focus primarily on capacity building, faculty and students exchange for the benefit of the two institutions. University of Liberia and Sharda University are respected globally and are leading institutes of higher learning established with specify defined objectives.

Sharda University (SU) is a multi-disciplinary university recognized by the Government of India and approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India. Sharda University offers internationally recognized Degrees and has memberships of Association of India Universities (AIU) and the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), to provide the best of research-based education to its students.

The University of Liberia was founded in 1862 as Liberia College and became a full University in 1951. It is a public institution funded mainly by the Government of Liberia. The University now has four campuses: Capitol Hill, Fendall, Medical School Fendall, and Starz-Sinji campus located in Sinji, Grand Cape Mount County.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by high corps of academics including Deans, Professors, and officials of the Office of International Relations of Sharda University.  The purpose of this MoU is to develop academic and educational co-operation and to promote mutual understanding between the two academic institutions, This MOU signifies a statement of Intent to collaborate. The two academic institutions agree to develop the following collaborative activities in the academic areas of mutual interest, on a basis of equality and reciprocity.

Receiving the three-man high-powered delegation headed by the Dean of Prof. Amos C. Sawyer College of Social Sciences and Humanities, Prof. Dr. Josephus M. Gray, the President of Sharda University, Dr. Ashok Daryani wholeheartedly welcomed the delegation and expressed optimism for greater collaboration and mutual cooperation between the two institutions.

During the signing ceremony, the President of Sharda University, Dr. Daryani reiterated the need for a stronger tie between the two sisterly universities aimed at strengthening ties between both institutions. The MoU paves the way for greater collaboration and partnership especially in the area of capacity building, faculty and students exchange.

Speaking on behalf of the President of the University of Liberia, the Coordinator in the office of UL President, Atty Cletus A. Sieh expressed delight and appreciation to the President of Sharda University for embracing such a laudable venture that promotes congenial academic partnership and collaboration. Mr. Sieh used the occasion to express optimism that students and faculty of the University of Liberia will take advantage of the opportunity.

During the signing ceremony, two books authored by two professors of the Prof. Amos C. Sawyer College of Social Sciences and Humanities, Dr. Josephus M. Gray, Dean of the College and Assistant Prof. Richmond S. Anderson, Chairman of the Department of Political Science, presented copies of their books to the President of Sharda University.

Meanwhile, the Sharda University President, Dr. Daryani praised Dr. Josephus Gray and Assistant Professor Richmond Anderson for the sharing new knowledge through the quality of their books.

The Sharda University President encourages Dr. Josephus Gray to consider publication of a future book that will focus on Liberia, US and India’s Relations. He expressed his interest to co-author Dr. Gray future book and expressed the university interest to sponsor the book publication.

Also, a special gift was presented to the President of Sharda University by Atty Cletus A. Sieh on behalf of the President of University of Liberia, Prof. Dr. Julius Jolokun Sarwolo Nelson, Jr. Receiving the gift, the President of Sharda University expressed appreciation for the kind gesture.

Meanwhile, The MoU paves the way for Sharda University and the University of Liberia to expand working relationship at academic and mutual levels for the benefit of the two higher institutions. Major areas of benefits include exchange of faculty and sabbaticals, exchange of Ph.D. scholars, provision of scholarships for postgraduate and undergraduate students, dual degree program, credit transfer programs, short- and long-term customized courses, joint collaborative research projects and publication of a joint peer-viewed research journal.

While in Delhi, the UL delegation also held discussions with high profile Deans, Heads of academic departments and Units, Academic Directors and Research Scholars. The delegation was taken on a guided tour to several facilities of the Sharda University including the school world class campus, the teaching hospital and the various academic departments.
