UNDP and Liberia National Police Forge Stronger Alliance for Reform and Security
In a significant stride toward strengthening national security and driving institutional reform, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Liberia National Police (LNP) have reinforced their strategic partnership. This commitment was highlighted during a high-level meeting held today, Thursday, April 10, 2025, at the LNP Headquarters in Monrovia, bringing together UNDP Resident Representative Mr. Aliou Dia and Inspector General of Police Gregory Coleman.
Discussions centered on crucial collaborative efforts to enhance law enforcement operations and bolster public confidence across Liberia. A key priority was the upcoming by-election in Nimba County, with both leaders emphasizing the critical need for a peaceful, transparent, and credible process. The UNDP and LNP pledged to work in close coordination to support the police force’s vital role in safeguarding the integrity of the election.
The ongoing digital transformation of police services nationwide also took center stage. With technical and financial backing from the UNDP, this digitalization initiative is geared toward improving operational efficiency, transparency, and overall service delivery within the LNP, forming a key component of broader justice and security sector reforms.
Furthermore, Mr. Dia and IG Coleman addressed the important issue of gender inclusivity within the security sector. They reaffirmed their joint dedication to increasing the representation of women in the LNP, recognizing the significant value women bring to building a more responsive and community-focused police service.
A pressing concern regarding the LNP’s aging workforce was also acknowledged. With over 80 percent of personnel currently above the age of 45, both parties recognized the urgent necessity for the recruitment and comprehensive training of younger officers to ensure the continuity and long-term sustainability of effective policing efforts.
“UNDP remains fully committed to supporting the Liberia National Police in strengthening its institutional capacity and driving forward meaningful police reform,” affirmed Mr. Dia.
This meeting underscores a renewed and robust phase of cooperation between the United Nations and Liberia’s security institutions. As their engagement deepens, the shared objective remains clear: to cultivate a safer, more accountable, and community-centered policing system for all Liberians.
