Ten Ghanaians Jailed For Alleged Illegal Mining
The Monrovia City Court has incarcerated ten Ghanaian nationals for illegal mining, using dredge and intentionally depriving the government of Liberia of revenue and sabotaging the economy of the country.
Defendants Ekiedzi Sampson, Peter Manjor, Judah Gadeto, Abraham Johnson, Jeffery Azialfu, Julius Dzrasah, Freeman Kpodo, Thomas Dogle, Emmanuel Atineku, and Joshua Adaglyna, were arrested on March 28 in the area of Manjoe Town in Todee by the Liberia National Police following a complaint filed by the Government of Liberia that the defendants were illegally depriving the government of needed revenue by engaging in illegal mining.
The ten defendants were on Tuesday arraigned before the Monrovia City Court at the Temple of Justice to answer to the charges levied against them.
Immediately after the defendants were charged and forwarded to court, they were arrested after a Writ of Arrest was issued against them.
According to the writ, during the period of March 2019 in the area of Manjoe Town in Todee District in Montserrado County, the defendants purposely and intentionally engaged in illegal mining using dredge and other equipment with the intent to deprive the government of Liberia of revenue and in the same vein sabotage the economy of the country.
The writ said the alleged act of the defendants being unlawful, wicked, criminal, and wilful is in violation of Section 15.51 and 15.80 of the Revised Code of the Republic of Liberia.
Meanwhile, the defendants have been incarcerated at the Monrovia Central Prison awaiting court trial
