(LINA) – Liberia and Sierra Leone will on Sunday, July 22, lock horns in a special soccer friendly as part of activities marking the celebration of Liberia’s 171st independence anniversary celebration on July 26.
According to Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Andrew Quamie, the game is based on a request by Liberian authorities to Sierra Leonean authorities to participate in the friendly.
Quamie told reporters in Monrovia Thursday that the friendly encounter marks the 16th time Liberia and Sierra Leone are locking horns in soccer.
He added that Liberia has proven supremacy over their Sierra Leonean counterparts with eight wins and four draws, while Sierra Leone has just three victories over Liberia.
The Deputy Minister for Sports has, meanwhile, urged citizens to witness the match and act orderly at the Samuel K. Doe stadium, where the soccer encounter will take place.
Quamie indicated that stringent security measures will be put in place by the Liberia National Police as Liberians and foreigners watch the game between the two countries.
He appealed to citizens to be fully dressed in the national colors to support the national team.
