A Fort Riley soldier’s wife was arrested Thursday and accused of shooting him dead at the Kansas Army base, according to the Justice Department. Margaret E. Shafe, 30, is charged with second-degree murder in the death of her husband Spc. Greg Shafe, 35.

He died Monday, according to federal court documents filed in the District of Kansas. The affidavit to support the charges against Margaret Shafe were filed Wednesday under seal and are not publicly available.

However, a background check showed the two were married. Margaret Shafe is scheduled to appear in court March 7 in Topeka before Magistrate Judge Rachel E. Schwartz, according to the online court docket. If convicted, she could face life in prison. An attorney listed online for Margaret Shafe did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The shooting occurred in the soldier’s home at Fort Riley, according to the 1st Armored Division, the unit to which Greg Shafe had been assigned since October 2022 as a supply specialist. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the soldier’s family, friends and teammates,” the division said in a statement.

Greg Shafe is from Arma, Kansas, a town about three and half hours’ drive from Fort Riley, according to the division. He enlisted in the Army in May 2022. The case remains under investigation by the FBI and the Army Criminal Investigation Division.
