Senate Finance Committee Commends LRA For Boosting Domestic Revenue Collection

By Amos Harris

The Senate Committee on Ways, Means, Finance, and Budget has formally commended the Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA) for its consistent and effective efforts in significantly boosting domestic revenue collection, a crucial factor in strengthening the nation’s overall fiscal stability.

Senator Prince Moye, serving as the Chair of the esteemed Senate Committee, brought the LRA’s notable progress to the forefront during his address to the Senate plenary session on Tuesday. He highlighted that a recent comprehensive report submitted by the LRA indicated a substantial collection of over $262 million in domestic revenue by the close of April 2025.

This significant achievement is particularly noteworthy given the backdrop of a challenging fiscal environment encountered earlier in the year. Senator Moye pointed out that the nation faced a 10 percent revenue shortfall during the first quarter. However, he was pleased to report that through the diligent efforts of the LRA, this initial deficit has been considerably reduced by $5.3 million, according to the Senator representing Bong County.

Acknowledging the persistent pressures on the national budget, including the impact of reductions in foreign aid, Senator Moye nevertheless emphasized that the performance of domestic revenue collection remains on track and aligned with the government’s projected targets. This positive trend offers a degree of reassurance regarding the nation’s financial outlook.

Furthermore, Senator Moye addressed the observed slower pace of government spending. He attributed this to the recent introduction of an automated procurement system, designed to enhance transparency and accountability in government expenditures. While acknowledging that this new system has introduced a more rigorous layer of procedural requirements to the expenditure process, Senator Moye expressed his strong confidence that it will ultimately lead to more efficient and responsible public spending practices, aligning with the government’s broader objectives of financial accountability and strict fiscal discipline.
