President Boakai Vows to Uphold Democracy Amidst Legislative Impasse

Monrovia, Liberia – April 24, 2025 – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr. has issued a firm statement reaffirming his commitment to upholding Liberia’s democracy and ensuring the continued functioning of the government, despite the unresolved crisis within the House of Representatives.

In a statement released following the Supreme Court of Liberia’s ruling on the Bill of Information related to the legislative impasse, President Boakai acknowledged the court’s decision but emphasized that the core problem within the House remains unresolved.

“On Wednesday (April 23, 2025), the Supreme Court of Liberia, our nation’s highest arbiter of justice, delivered its ruling on the Bill of Information relating to the ongoing impasse in the House of Representatives. As President of the Republic, I acknowledge the ruling of the Supreme Court. However, we must all note that the House of Representatives’ problem remains unresolved,” President Boakai stated.

The President disclosed that his administration has initiated extensive consultations with key national stakeholders, including traditional and national leaders, to determine a constitutionally sound path forward. He stressed his unwavering commitment to preserving the sanctity of Liberia’s democracy and the principle of three separate but coordinate branches of government.

“The president said, the government has already initiated broad consultations with relevant national stakeholders to determine the most appropriate and constitutionally sound path forward. We have actively involved our traditional and other national leaders in addressing this matter. In doing so, we remain fully committed to preserving the sanctity of our democracy and the principle of three separate but coordinate branches of government,” he affirmed.

President Boakai reiterated the constitutional definition of a quorum for legislative business, vowing to uphold this principle and work with a quorum that ensures the government’s full functionality. He expressed deep concern over the prolonged division within the House, which he said has undermined public confidence in a vital democratic institution. He also condemned the recent arson attack on the Capitol Building and reports of vandalism aimed at desecrating public institutions.

“He further stated that our Constitution and the Supreme Court have defined what constitutes a quorum for the conduct of business in the Legislature. We intend to vigorously uphold this vital principle of our constitutional democracy. We will continue to work with the quorum that will ensure the full functioning of our government,” he declared.

The President made it clear that his government will not be held hostage by narrow interests or acts of lawlessness, asserting that the work of governance will continue unabated. He warned that those who undermine peace, violate the law, or seek to disrupt national harmony will face the full force of the law.

“Let me be clear: under my leadership, the government of Liberia will not be held hostage by narrow interests or acts of lawlessness. The work of governance will continue, and nothing will distract us from our duty to serve the Liberian people,” he emphasized.

President Boakai urged Liberians to remain calm and confident, assuring them that the government remains functional and committed to delivering services and upholding democratic values. He called on elected leaders to remember their oath to the nation and urged citizens to rise above division, demonstrating patriotism and unity.

“He urges all Liberians to go about their daily lives peacefully and confidently. Your government remains functional and steadfast in its responsibility to deliver services, maintain order, and uphold the values of democracy and good governance,” he concluded.
