Pres. Weah Says Recent Visit To China ‘Successful’

President George Manneh Weah has termed his recent visit to the People’s Republic of China as “very successful.”

President Weah traveled to China to attend the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) aimed at strengthening cooperation Africa, with Liberia targeting the areas of poverty reduction, agriculture, infrastructure development and health.

Speaking to a team of journalists upon his arrival at the Roberts International Airport in Margibi County on Sunday, the Liberian leader said the essence of his participating in the forum was to re-strengthen Liberia’s relationship with that sisterly state.

“On the overall, I think our trip was successful because Liberia was able to secure a US$48 million grant for two overhead bridges and an additional US$20 million for food assistance,” President Weah disclosed.

According to the President, he also held talks with China’s President Xi Jinping on how both countries can work together to achieve the ‘win-win’ collaboration under the “Belt and Road Initiative.”

It can be recalled that President Weah at the just-ended FOCAC restated Liberia’s determination to work with China to expand the win-win collaboration between Africa and China, and to defend the multilateralism of the international order and the world free trade system.

He emphasized that Liberia remains firmly committed to the One-China Policy and the China-Africa joint collaboration.

According to him, Liberia under his administration will take all necessary measures to enhance the already strong bilateral relations and cooperation subsisting between the two countries.

He assured President Xi that Liberia-China relations will reach new levels as the both countries work together to achieve the mutual aspirations of their peoples.

The FOCAC which was held in Beijing, the Chinese capital, from September 3-4 under the framework of the “Belt and Road Initiative” was geared toward strengthening exchanges between and amongst leaders of Africa and China.

President Xi at the start of the forum called on African leaders to continuously show mutual understanding and support to China and one another on issues of their respective core interests and major concerns.
