Police Refute Death Report In District 13 By-Election Violence; Launch Probe
The Liberia National Police refutes reports that a Liberian died as a result of violence that ensued between supporters of some candidates in the District #13 by-election.
A police statement said on November 17 violence broke out between some supporters of candidates in the District #13 by-election when the various parties and representatives had gathered in their numbers to officially close their campaigns ahead of Tuesday’s polls.
The situation left four persons – three males and one female – injured, the police statement said.
The injured victims were immediately rushed to the Kevin Clinic in Bassa Town, New Georgia for treatment after which they were discharged.
Meanwhile, the LNP has launched an investigation to ensure that perpetrators of such violence are made to face the full weight of the law.
Members of the general public, the statement said, are urged to cooperate with the Police in ensuring those who perpetrated such acts are penalized.
The LNP also frowns on acts of violence which have the propensity to undermine the fragile peace Liberians enjoy.
As residents of District #13 go to the polls on Tuesday, November 20, voters are advised to comport themselves in an orderly and peaceful manner in order to avoid any other acts of violence, the police statement cautioned.
It noted that the LNP will deploy greater police presence in District #13 to ensure a peaceful conduct of the by-elections.
