Parish priest arrested in India for hate speech

MADURAI: Father George Ponnaiah, the priest of Panavilai parish in Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu who was booked for his hate and derogatory speech, was arrested in the early hours of Saturday.

The priest was arrested from Othakadai on the outskirts of Madurai. Superintendent of police of Kanyakumari district V Badri Narayanan told TOI that they had got a tip-off that Ponnaiah was travelling in a car. “We shared the vehicle details and possible location with the Madurai district police. He was nabbed around 4am and was handed over to the special team from Kanyakumari at Kalligudi,” he added.

Later, he was produced before a Kuzhithurai court in Kanyakumari district. The court remanded him in judicial custody for 15 days.
