Today is Black Friday, kicking off the start of the holiday shopping rush.

It’s a much shorter season this year, due to Thanksgiving falling on the last possible date in November. Over 100 million people will expectedly hit the stores on Black Friday alone.

Eager shoppers started taking advantage of Black Friday deals last night.

Stores opened early, and some came in knowing exactly what to buy.

“I’ve been here since 6:00 a.m. and I’m here because they have a pots and pans set that I really want for my mother for Christmas. It’s like over $1,000, but right now it’s 80 percent off,” said a shopper at Macy’s Herald Square.

Another chimed in saying the savings may not be living up to the hype: “To be honest, I don’t think the deals are that great. It’s more like the ambiance. Great crowd, everyone out here is all nice.”

Macy’s representatives estimated that tens of thousands of shoppers were at the flagship store last night.

“Our colleagues that are here working the holiday, they’ve opted in to work here. So everybody’s excited to be here, there’s a party atmosphere,” said a Macy’s employee.

Similarly, shoppers lined up at other stores across the country to take advantage of deals on Thanksgiving night.

A Best Buy in Alabama set up barriers to keep the crowds under control before opening. And in Connecticut, lines started stretching around the block of a West Hartford mall from Thursday afternoon.

Last year, $6.2 billion was spent on Black Friday.
