NYPD: Officer Wounded as Police Fatally Shoot Man on Staten Island

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. A man was killed, and a police officer is in critical but stable condition following a shooting on Staten Island on Sunday night, the city police department said.

It happened around 9:50 p.m. after two officers responded to a 911 call of a domestic dispute involving an intoxicated person at a home located at 30 Bridge Court in Fort Wadsworth.

The NYPD said when the officers arrived; the man was brandishing a 14-inch knife and moved towards them. The officers told him multiple times to drop the knife before one of them deployed a taser, officials said.

Police said the taser failed the stop the man, resulting in the officers firing 10 to 15 shots, hitting him multiple times. The man later died.

The officer hurt was shot during the exchange. Sources said he was shot in the stomach.

The police department said the shooting happened in tight corners outside the side apartment, in an alleyway.

The NYPD said the man shouted “Shoot me!” multiple times at the officers.

Sources said police had been to the home twice in the past to respond to domestic incidents. The man’s identity has not been released at this time.

Both officers were equipped with body cameras, the NYPD said.

The investigation is ongoing.

A spokesman for Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Twitter that he has been briefed and will likely visit the officer on Monday.
