Barclayville, Grand Kru County – June 13, 2026 – The Wedabo Semi Senior High School Annex in the Wedabo-Grandcess Education District of Electoral District Number One, Grand Kru County, is nearing completion and is expected to be dedicated soon. This significant infrastructure initiative is a key component of the “Improving Results in Secondary Education (IRISE) Project,” generously supported by funding from the World Bank.
Education authorities have confirmed that the IRISE Project is actively constructing three new school facilities within the county, specifically in Wedabo Gbanken, Jloh Nifu, and Doeswen in Dorbor Statutory Districts.
The IRISE Project, implemented through the Ministry of Education, aims to substantially enhance the quality and accessibility of secondary education, while simultaneously improving learning outcomes at the senior secondary level, particularly in rural communities across Liberia. Upon their successful completion and dedication by the government and the World Bank, these projects are poised to address critical infrastructure gaps and fundamentally transform the learning environment for ambitious students and dedicated educators within Grand Kru County’s educational sector.
Speaking to reporters during a recent visit to the project site in Wedabo Gbanken, Principal Augustine Tarh of Wedabo Semi Senior High School confirmed that the construction of the senior high annex is in its final stages. He revealed that while the project was initially launched during the tenure of former President George Weah, it experienced prolonged delays for undisclosed reasons. However, Principal Tarh noted with satisfaction that construction regained rapid momentum under the current administration of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai.
“This annex is not just another building; it represents a modern educational facility,” stated Principal Tarh. “It includes tiled floors, a cooling system, a well-equipped library, and other amenities specifically designed to create a truly conducive learning environment for our students.”
The addition of this new annex is anticipated to significantly increase the school’s capacity, accommodating more students, particularly out-of-school youth in Grand Kru County who have historically been marginalized by limited space and inadequate infrastructure.
Further bolstering the school’s resources, Wedabo Central High recently received a timely donation of 150 modern armchairs, directly addressing a long-standing challenge of overcrowded and poorly furnished classrooms. Principal Tarh expressed profound appreciation for the donation, describing it as a crucial intervention. “This is a huge boost to our capacity,” he noted. “We’ve struggled with adequate seating for years, and this donation will undoubtedly help create a more comfortable and organized setting for our students, enhancing their focus and learning.”
With the annex nearing completion, a palpable sense of excitement is building among students, teachers, and community members alike, who view this development as a pivotal turning point for education in the region.
Principal Tarh also seized the opportunity to issue a passionate appeal to parents and local stakeholders, urging them to take education seriously and make a tangible investment in the future of their children. “Education is the only inheritance that can truly transform lives,” he emphasized. “I call on all parents and citizens of Grand Kru to prioritize education and actively support their children’s academic journey. The future of our county, and indeed our nation, largely depends on the choices we collectively make today.”
The nearing completion of the Wedabo Central High Additional Annex stands as a beacon of progress, powerfully highlighting national efforts to strengthen Liberia’s educational system and ensure that quality learning is genuinely within reach for every child.
