New Jersey has seen a massive surge in flu-related emergency room visits and admissions in recent weeks as the state continues to battle one of the worst flu seasons in years — and possibly on record, experts say.

There have been 7,300 confirmed influenza cases so far this season — about 3,100 more than during the same period last year — with one death from a flu-related illness, according to the latest data from the state Department of Health.

And, according to the latest data, emergency room visits and admissions in New Jersey have surpassed the three highest flu seasons ever recorded in the state, as patients continue to flood clinics and emergency rooms, putting some at full capacity.
