LISGIS Commences 16 days training workshop for Field Mapping Assistants and Cartographers

The Liberian Institute of Statistics and Geo-Information Services (LISGIS), on Wednesday February 24 lunched a 16-day training for Field Mapping Assistants and Cartographers in Kakata Margibi County.

Giving an overview of the 2021 Census Project at the opening in Kakata, the Census Coordinator of LISGIS Andrew Telleweon who proxy for Director General Prof. Francis F. Wreh said the training is part of process leading to the conduct of the National population and housing census noting that similar training was organized for Field Mapping Assistants and Cartographers earlier in last year but they couldn’t countinue the process due to the surfaces of Covid-19 in Liberia.

Mr. Telleweon mentioned that during the exercise, all structures in Liberia including residential and commercial buildings, schools, clinics, hospitals will be geo-coded.

Mr. Telleweon however, praised government and international partners for the partnership as he assured government commitment for a successful Census in Liberia.

The Census Coordinator noted that the field staff will be deploy on March 10, 2021, in all the 15 counties of Liberia.

For his part, Mr. Ibrahim Seasay who spoke on behave of UNFPA said the Field Mapping Assistants and Cartographers will delineate the country into enumeration areas for the subsequent enumeration of the population.

The delineation of enumeration areas according to him is the scientific process that determines the number, types and quality of buildings within the country and the number of census taker to be deployed for the listing of the population.

He said a successful delineation of enumeration areas also leads to the creation of a sample frame for surveys.

The opening of the workshop was attended by stakeholders, the United Nations family along with the Government of Liberia representatives and its international partners who are major sponsors of the Census Project.

LISGIS in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) will be conducting its 2021 Round of National Population and Housing Census of Liberia.
