One of Liberia’s top environmentalists is calling on Liberians including the media to be more robust in tackling the issue of waste solid management if the country to succeed in its Clean Environmental drive which is seriously confronting the country.
Addressing a joint news conference at the headquarters of the Press Union of Liberia (PUL) with the President of the PUL, Charles Coffey, the Executive Director of Africa Environmental Watch, Dr. Morris Koffa called on all Liberians including the media to join hands in overcoming solid waste management in the Country.
He noted that solid waste management being one of the most confronting issues in the society today, all concerned must see reason in joining the fight against solid waste management in the country by jointly addressing the country’s sanitation challenges.
Dr. Koffa further disclosed that a partnership of concerned Liberians environmental groups based in the United States are due in the country shortly to jointly help in the process, noting, “We are here to lend helping hands to talk about how we can help in cleaning the environment. But I want to urge all Liberians, including the media to join hands in the process,” Dr. Koffa told journalists at the news conference.
According to him, the media must play its role in educating the public, stressing, “We as citizens must ensure that our communities are clean, while the government bears the responsibility to providing the finances in this process,” he said.
Meanwhile, the President of the Press Union of Liberia, Charles B. Coffey speaking at the news conference said, the media must also play its role in the process, by creating awareness, pointing out of most recent assertion by the Head of Delegation of the European Union to L:Iberia about the country’s sanitation must be seen as a wakeup call not only to the society to the media as a whole, and further lauded the Director General of the GSA, Mary Broh for her recent role in clearing filth from the streets.
