As the holding of the by-elections for both senatorial and representatives draw closer come July 8, 2019 as being declared by the National Elections Commission (NEC), contenders in this race are confident of capturing their respective seats in the areas of their choice.
Already the ruling CDC has declared that the county being contended for, Monserrado County is ‘No go zone’ for the opposition during these elections, candidates for the opposition have all challenged this utterance and vowed to crush the ruling party in its bid for the win despite recent calls by President George Manneh Weah.
In these elections, the ruling party has resolved to support Paulita Wieh for the Senate, Abu Kama for the House of Representatives, while collaborating opposition parties (ALP, ANC, LP and UP) have put their weight behind two young candidates, Mr. A. Darius Dillon from LP running for the Senate and Ms. Telia Urey of ALP vying for the District 15 seat in the House of representatives.
Some Liberians who spoke to the GNN during last weekend in an exclusive interview, expressed fear of foul play in the upcoming July 8, 2019 by-elections, noting that for they have observed the opposition bloc is making headway in its political campaigns by convincing electorates to cast their votes against the ruling party, despite of pledge made by the Liberian leader that Montserrado County is no go zone for the opposition.
Speaking furthe, those interviewed cited a specific incident during the last by-elections when President Weah proudly stood firm to express his full support to John Weah, (No relationship), a contender of District 13 Representatives over the others putting up his hands that he was the only winning candidate for District, but to his utmost this turned the other way around when an independent candidate Edward Papay Flomo, Jr., known popularly as ‘Color Green’ who won obtaining 5,310 votes, which is 34.4 percent succeeding former Representative, Saah Hardy Joseph who is now in the Senate.
But lamented that the electoral commission, the National Elections Commission (NEC) may likely be influenced by the executive in order to decide in its favor; allowing those candidates who are running on the ticket of the ruling party to receive a free passage in their quest for both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
“We hope the National Elections Commission (NEC) will be objective and independent in the release of the results at the end of the poll, and further prayed that the executive will not interfere,” Abraham Q. R. Johnson of central Monrovia speaking to the GNN noted.
“I am sorry for those on the ticket of the CDC, this party has failed us by dashing our hopes and aspirations; the hardship we are going through has tripled, we don’t know where to turn,” Sarai Walker, a student of the University of Liberia speaking to our reported lamented.
For others, mainly of the ruling CDC, who also spoke to our reporter, bragged that their candidates during these elections will win at all cost their preferred choice in both the House and the Senate, noting that nothing can stop them, and further decried the negative propaganda being preached by the opposition on local radio stations against the ruling party.
“It is unbelievable to hear on some local radio stations of the negative messages being preached by the opposition of this government, not realizing that Rome was never built in a day’s time; this government will put them to shame, especially those who are seeking its downfall,” Jacob P. Harris who claimed to be a diehard member of the party speaking to the GNN said.
However, Liberians mainly who also spoke to the GNN are praying for the better during the holding of these elections, and prayed for God’s intervention as voters go to the poll to elect their preferred choice on that day, July 8, 2019.
