Liberian Gov’t Places Stop Order On “Black Sand” Mining

Following report by the GNN-Liberian and other social media platforms that some group of Chinese were exporting tones of Black Sand from Liberia, the Liberian Cabinet, presided over by His Excellency Joseph Nyuma Boakai, has placed a stop order on “black sand mining” carried out by some foreign nationals which went viral on Liberian social media fora, Information Minister Jerolinmek M. Piah announced on Thursday at the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism Press Briefing.

Bags of sand ready for exportation

Minister Piah said, “The quantity of black sand seen on social media video posted by a citizen journalist is alarming and the Government has moved in very quickly to ensuring the protection of our landscape and mineral resources”.

The Cabinet, in its third sitting on Wednesday, April 3 since the inauguration of President Boakai on January 22 this year, also mandated the Ministry of Mines and Energy to conduct thorough investigations into the black sand mining meant for export.
