World leaders attending the 74th Session ofthe United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) paid tribute to the 28 fallen Liberians, mostly children, who recently died in a tragic fire incident in Paynesville, outside Monrovia.
The brief moment of silence for the deceased (all Muslims) was observed by world leaders at the inception of President George Manneh Weah’s address at the 74th Session of the UNGA currently taking place in New York.
“Before I begin my address, I would like to ask you to kindly join me to observe a moment of silence for the death of 28 young scholars who died last week in a tragic fire in Liberia,” the Liberian leader requested.
Dr. Weah extolled his international counterparts for their support to Liberia during such difficult time in the lives of some Liberians.
“I would like to thank the large number of you who shared our grief and loss by sending us condolences through personal phones calls and social media. God bless you for your compassion,” he noted.
On Wednesday, September 18, a total of 28 Liberians, mostly kids, died in a tragic fire disaster at a Qur’anic school outside Liberia’s capital. The kids, according to Islamic clergy, were about to complete a Qur’anic recitation program.
Back home, President Weah described the fatal incident as completely heartbreaking and extended the government’s sympathy to the families of the deceased and assured that a thorough investigation will be conducted into the matter.
He pledged the Government of Liberia support to the rebuilding of the Islamic school, including the Mosque that were burned down during the fire disaster.
