Liberia National Police (LNP) says its attention has been drawn to a video footage circulating on social media of the alleged torture and abuse of three women in Johnny Town, Sinoe County which allegedly resulted to the death of a 22 year-old woman identified as Williette Nyenwlah.
Contrary to reports that the government of Liberia has done nothing about the situation, the LNP said it wishes to clarify that seven suspects were arrested on December 12, 2018 in Johnny Town, Kpanyan District, Sinoe County, investigated and charged with Murder, Aggravated Assault, Criminal Conspiracy, Criminal Facilitation and Rioting, and forwarded to court for prosecution.
Those forwarded to court included Tweh Kelgbeh, 40; Anthony Kamoh, 47; Moses Solo, Jr., 48; Marshall Gballah, 49; Dennis Nimely, 38; Shelton Kamoh, and Teah Gmawlue, all residents of Johnny Town in Kpanyan District, Sinoe County.
The victims of the December 12, 2018 incident were Williette Nyenwlah, 22 (deceased); Angeline Saylee, 25; and Florence Tankleh, 19.
While the LNP and the Ministry of Gender acknowledge the roles of the Rural Women of Sinoe County to advocate for the rights of citizens, the two agencies of government are, however, appalled by the misrepresentation of information to the public.
The act of presenting an incident which occurred in December last year after seven persons were arrested, investigated, charged, and forwarded to court, as though it is something that recently occurred can only be described as an act of evil-minded individuals bent on destroying the good works of the Liberia National Police and the Ministry of Gender.
The Liberia National Police hereby informs the public that it is not interested in shielding anyone who infringes on the rights of others, and at the same time warns the public to desist from misinforming and inciting the people through social media and other outlets which have the propensity to undermine the security of the state.
In joint efforts, the Liberia National Police and the Gender Ministry since the incident have been working with the Sinoe Rural Women, youths, and Traditional Council in ensuring that perpetrators of this act, who are currently in pre-trial detention, are made to face the full weight of the law, the Police and Gender Ministry said in a joint statement issued in Monrovia Tuesday.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Gender is conducting psychosocial counseling for victims and has provided them with medical and financial support, the statement said.
According to the statement, the Liberia National Police and the Ministry of Gender remain committed to ensuring the scrupulous implementation of the rule of law.
In another development, 23 suspects and their ring leaders identified as Tweh Saykajibo, 60, and Brown Pennon, 60, have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the torturing of victims Ruth Smith and her husband, Tokpah Quaqua, both residents of Grigsby Farm in Sinoe County.
Police preliminary probe revealed that on Tuesday, February 19, the victims were in their bedroom embroiled in an altercation when the suspects allegedly dragged them out of their home and began flogging the pair.
The investigation also established that the suspects claimed to be agents of the “Country Devil” and that they were dealing with the victims on traditional grounds.
The investigation further established that the seven-month pregnant victim and her husband were allegedly severely beaten by the suspects, resulting to serious bodily injuries and are currently undergoing medical treatment at a local health center in the county.
Additionally, the suspects attacked one senior Police officer, Chief Superintendent Alfred Wilson, resulting to an injury on his forehead while the Sinoe County Police-marked vehicle was badly damaged.
Meanwhile, 21 suspects are presently in Police custody undergoing investigation pending court trial.
The LNP warns those in the habit of taking the law into their hands to desist as it will not hesitate to ensure that those who violate the rule of law will not go with impunity.
